Is it really worth it? It is not like I need a new camera, my eyes just seem to need a new toy again. However, the more I think about it, the less I want to buy a new camera.
In other situations the picture quality doesn't differ that much. While you get a really washed out surface on dark materials/shadows with bayer cameras (due to the chroma noise reduction) on the sigma you can really see every detail. What I fell in love with is the capability of the Foveon to capture smooth materials much better, especially dark ones. Seems that the Sigma does much better with its 15MP and upscaled to 22MP it is still better. I compared some RAW's between 6D, 5D Mark III and Sigma SD1M. So the total cost would fall to around 700-900€. If I'd buy the 6D I could easily sell the 7D but still use the lenses I have now. The thing is, the 6D is still a good allrounder, the AF isn't too shabby (my Zeiss doesn't even have AF) and it is pretty cheap FF camera. The focus on my second body should be image quality. From what I heard the 6D has the same image quality as the 5D Mark III but without all the high tech features (61 point AF and other things) that I really don't need. So I compared it to the Canon 6D, wich is a little more expensive but I have seen bodies for 1300-1500€. Because the SD1M would be perfect for my personal work, but not for my standard reportages that I shoot to make money.
The thing is, I don't want to change the system completely. Read all possible reviews and tried out RAW's in SPP. It is still better than the 400D I used before though.Īs the SD1M is currently available for a little more than 1000€ I looked into it (once again). A nice allrounder, however the picture quality sometimes makes me wanna die. Altough I haven't been photographing a lot lately, I am still looking for a new camera.
